How to Look After Your VegTrug Over Autumn And Winter

How to Look After Your VegTrug Over Autumn And Winter

3 minute read

If you are one of the proud owners of one or more of our VegTrugs, now is the time to be thinking about what to grow in it over the colder months of the year.

Although we often think of the VegTrugs as being a place to raise vegetables, they are also the perfect place to create a riot of colour by growing flowering plants or small shrubs.

So, if you want to create a splash of colour for the cooler months ahead then way not plant some winter flowering bedding plants.

Add A Specially Designed Cold Frame

One way in which you could continue to use your VegTrug over the winter months to raise crops or to over-winter tender plants would be to fit a cold frame to it.

Available in the same size and colour as the VegTrugs, these specially designed cold frames will help to keep your plants free from excessive rain or snow. And will also provide some protection against frost. They are also great at the start of the growing season to lift temperatures as you sow seeds or plant new seedlings.

Nourish The Soil In Your VegTrug

If you are happy to keep using your VegTrug through the colder months, why not grow ‘green manure’? Sowing and growing this over the colder months until spring will help nourish the soil ready for new crops the following year. If any snow does fall you just need to make sure you clear it off the VegTrug to prevent any damage.

Leave In Place And Protect From The Winter Weather

If you don’t want to grow plants in your VegTrug through the colder months of the year, the simplest thing to do is empty out any finished crops and cover with a breathable material (such as our Cosygrow Garden Fleece) to protect it from any snow. The reason you cover with a breathable material rather than plastic is so that no mold grows in the compost/soil, but at the same time the trug is still protected from snow damage.

Empty And Store Over Winter

If you don’t want to keep your VegTrug outdoors when it isn’t filled with plants, there is the option to empty out the VegTrug and store it away until it’s needed again the following year.

If you empty out all the compost/soil from the trug it will make it lighter to lift and move. It also means, whilst it’s empty, you could clean it and give it a nice coating of a water-soluble, food based, wood treatment, to help keep it looking good year after year. It can then be stored in your garden shed or garage until it’s needed again. When it’s time to set it back up in the garden, you’ll be able to re-line it and add new nutrient rich compost/ soil so it’s ready for new crops to be planted.
